Emily’s Artist Statement
Art has been something I have been interested in my entire life, but it took until my senior year of high school to really become serious in art. My initial plan was to attend Waynesburg University to study Forensic Science, but I decided to take a different path and pursue a career that I not only found interesting but loved. Art was always more than a hobby for me, growing up it was the only class in school I would look forward to and I always felt very interested in every aspect whether it was creating art, hanging a show, or learning about the history of art. So I decided to pursue a career in a field that I was overall passionate about, not that I just found interesting.
My most serious and recently evolved artwork focuses on the symbolism of plants, animals, and other aspects of nature within different cultures and religions, and how those symbols can be related to human life in general. My interest in this theme of work stemmed from the influence of friends and family, as well as my own interests. Many of my friends and family study holistic medicine and crystal healing; the more I learned about the properties and techniques of the two I became very fascinated and started to do further research which led me into the symbolism of plants and animals.
My own interest in nature also contributed to this theme of work; I have always loved being outside and learning about different plants and animals. I am very happy with this style of work and it has made me grow more as an artist by learning to do research and create a real concept within my work. I have made several series of work using the theme of symbolism; one of these series is the Desires Series. This series is composed of three ceramic sculpture pieces that resemble crystals engulfing a human arm which is also holding a crystal. Each crystal represented symbolizes a desire that is common among people: rose quarts symbolizes love, amethyst symbolizes wealth, and aqua aura quartz which symbolizes power. The crystal taking over the arm that is holding it represents how these desires often consume people’s lives.
